What is trauma and complex trauma (C-PTSD)?

Trauma isn’t only about what happened to you. It’s about how those experiences continue to impact you in body, mind, and spirit

Trauma is the lasting emotional response that often results form living through a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person’s sense of safety, sense of self, and ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships. Long after the traumatic event occurs, people with trauma can often feel shame, helplessness, powerlessness and intense fear.

Complex traumatic experiences are often:

  • Repetitive, prolonged, or cumulative

  • Interpersonal, involving direct harm or abuse

  • Occur at vulnerable times in a person's life, especially childhood or adolescence

Why trauma-focused therapy might be right for you

Living with trauma (or complex trauma) can leave you feeling powerless, stuck and disconnected from yourself. Trauma and C-PTSD therapy can help you begin to rebuild your true self, including your:

  • Sense of control and safety

  • Inner strength

  • Self-compassion

Always at your own pace, and in a way that feels safe.

Holistic approach to trauma therapy

Trauma-focused therapy meets you with care, rather than treating you as a problem to fix. It honours the ways your nervous system learned to survive and creates space to tend to what still aches beneath the surface. Through this work, healing unfolds at a pace that feels safe and respectful, helping you reconnect with a steadier sense of self, deeper ease, and the freedom to move forward with trust and compassion.

Our trauma and C-PTSD therapy helps you recover from the impact of difficult experiences. Therapy offers a safe way to go deep, make connections, gain clarity, and build capacity to be a compassionate witness of past experiences in a healing way.

Our approach is especially effective for complex trauma and tailored to challenges such as intense or confusing emotions, relationship difficulties, and a shaky or critical sense of self.

C-PTSD therapy works with all of these together to help you better understand your reactions, build emotional stability, and reconnect with who you are beyond what you’ve been through.

In our therapy work, we primarily use two main approaches: EMDR and IFS.

Two effective approaches to C-PTSD & trauma therapy

EMDR therapy for trauma

EMDR helps your brain reprocess difficult memories in a safe, manageable way.

It uses gentle bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping, while you bring aspects of a memory to mind.

This process reduces how intense and overwhelming those memories feel. Over time, your emotional response can soften and the experience can be reframed so it no longer has the same power over you.

Many of our clients say EMDR made trauma-related memories less disturbing and easier to think about, helping them move forward without feeling constantly pulled back into the past.

IFS therapy for trauma

Internal Family Systems therapy is based on the idea that each of us has different “parts” inside — aspects of our personality that carry emotions, memories, and beliefs shaped by experience.

In IFS trauma therapy, you learn to notice and understand these parts rather than fight or judge them.

IFS helps you cultivate self-compassion and connect with your calm, grounded core, so you can become more self-led instead of feeling controlled by trauma reactions.

By developing a new relationship with your inner parts, therapy creates space for cooperation and understanding. Over time, this can lead to greater balance, relief from old emotional patterns, and healing at the root, not just at the surface.
